Learn More

If you have questions or would like to learn more about mental health disorders, please contact Pacific Neuropsychiatric Specialists (Preferred Orange County Psychiatrist) at 714-545-5550.

Future Psychiatrist News will include: anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, PTSD, psychiatry, psychologist vs. psychiatrist, obsession, cognitive behavioral therapy, alcoholism, hallucination, and more.

Alcohol or chemical dependency is the abuse of alcohol or chemicals despite negative consequences. Both alcohol and chemical abuse are toxic to not only your body, but your mind, as well. Often we see disastrous effects in a person’s health and personal life.  On the physical side prolonged abuse can cause organ failure and death… on the mental side we see families ripped apart, wounded relationships, and other forms of abuse.

Children are most affected by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, many adults deal with ADHD, as well.  The most common symptoms of ADHD are inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement, which is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (these are reactions which may occur in the moment without thought). We will work with you to alleviate the anxiety of ADD and ADHD.

Everyone experiences anxiety. Those who suffer from anxiety disorders experience “larger than life” levels of anxiety. It is important to treat anxiety as it can (and often does) interfere with daily life and can create more problems, including relationship problems. If you suffer from anxiety it is important to learn about it so you can lead a healthy life.

Sadly, there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, but there is hope and there is a wide range of treatments. Our goal in treating autism is to maximize your son or daughter’s ability to function and lead a life where autism does not dictate their success. Treatment should focus on the symptoms and support development and learning. Often, early diagnosis and intervention during the preschool years can, and often does, help your child learn critical social, communication, functional and behavioral skills.

We believe and use several analysis and treatment protocols, including applied behavior analysis (which encourages positive behaviors using a reward system), cognitive behavioral therapy (sometimes called talk therapy), social skills therapy, sensory integration therapy, speech therapy, medication, and alternative treatments.

Potential alternative treatments pending research include:
  • gluten-free, casein-free diet
  • weighted blankets
  • melatonin
  • vitamin C
  • omega-3 fatty acids
  • dimethylglycine
  • vitamin B-6 and magnesium combined
  • oxytocin
  • CBD oil
Asperger’s is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which often is exhibited in difficulties with social interactions and nonverbal communications, there may also be restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior or interests. Asperger’s is an autism spectrum disorder, however the patient may not have impaired language or intelligence. Similar treatments to autism may be used.
Bipolar Disorder or manic depression is very common.  It may be associated with mood swings ranging from deep depression to manic highs. Bipolar may be caused by genetics, the environment, or altered brain structure or chemistry.  If you are facing challenges of bursts of energy followed by no energy, changes in sleep, changes in motivation, or if you are losing touch with reality, then please give us a call.  Bipolar is more common then you may think and it can be addressed. We know managing these symptoms without the proper help can be overwhelming. Psychiatrists may prescribe medication and treatments for both the manic and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
Dementia symptoms often affect memory, thinking and social abilities. The symptoms of dementia may be severe enough interfere with your daily life. Science believes dementia may not be a specific disease, rather a combination of several different mental health disorders.

Memory loss alone doesn’t mean you have dementia.

Sometimes through medication and treatment dementia symptoms may be reversible.
Insomnia, when chronic, should be considered as a comorbid condition. Chronic insomnia lasts for at least 3 months and can be primary or secondary. Most insomnia can be treated with medication and typically this medication may be used only when needed. If left untreated insomnia can lead to fatigue, mood changes, or irritability.
If we were honest with ourselves, almost everyone suffers from PTSD from some life experience. PTSD causes people to feel like they are in danger or they may encounter extreme stress in situations that remind them of their traumatic experience. Do not make the mistake that PTSD is only for the military! It is incredibly important to treat PTSD, not only to ensure safety, but because living a healthy and happy life is possible (free from the symptoms of PTSD).
Interpreting reality abnormally may be a sign of schizophrenia. schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior, which may impair daily functioning. Often schizophrenia may become debilitating.

Often those with schizophrenia may require treatment, which lasts a lifetime.  Not treating schizophrenia early may make getting symptoms harder to control and complications may develop.
Psychotherapy is often the first step in working with people who experience “chronic” suicide ideation or behavior. When individuals are at any level of risk (especially if they have thought or verbalized how to commit suicide) it is extremely essential they receive a higher level of care, which may include hospitalization or intense in-patient or out-patient treatment.

If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, do not wait, get help. Utilize #911 or The National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-8255. If you or a loved one is stable, but continues to have thoughts of suicide, please contact us and mention to our team the thoughts you are having so we can see you, as soon as possible.
